Yutaka Sado will conduct the Super Kids Orchestra (orchestra composed with Japanese kids musicians), and the Orchestre JAPONAIDE (orchestra composed by some volunteer musicians from the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Paris, the Orchestre Lamoureux, the Orchestre Colonne, the Ensemble orchestral de Paris, the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, etc.) on March 11th at the Unesco in Paris. This solidarity concert, first anniversary of the Earthquake, will be in support for the Tsunami’s victims. The Super Kids Orchestra will also give a concert at the Cathédrale Notre Dame on March 9th after a mess for the Tsunami’s victims. There will be a photo exposition on the Tsunami on March 11th outside the Hall 1 at the Unesco.

Deux œuvres rares de Chopin enregistrées aux Flâneries

Souvenez-vous. Eté 2010, les Flâneries musicales programment une série Chopin au Manège de Reims.
Le concert qu'y donnent Olivier Charlier, Abdel Rahman El Bacha et Antoine Pierlot est un bijou. Dans la salle comble, le trio communie si bien que le public lui fait un triomphe. Le souvenir de ce moment unique est désormais gravé dans un enregistrement sorti en ce début d'année par Transart Live, le label fondé par l'ancien programmateur des Flâneries, Hervé Corre de Valmalète. L'occasion d'apprécier à nouveau ou de découvrir deux œuvres rares du compositeur romantique. Des œuvres qui marquent le début et la fin de sa vie. La sonate pour violoncelle et piano, opus 65, est sans doute la dernière pièce écrite par Frédéric Chopin. Tout au moins la dernière publiée de son vivant. Le trio pour violon, violoncelle et piano, opus 8, au contraire, est une œuvre de jeunesse. Le pianiste émérite en signe la partition alors qu'il n'a que 19 ans. En dehors des œuvres avec orchestre, elle constituera sa seule pièce écrite pour le violon. Aux Flâneries de Reims, c'est Olivier Charlier qui l'interprète. Le brillant violoniste raconte volontiers comment ce trio a bien failli échapper à son répertoire. « Dans une lettre, Chopin se demande s'il n'aurait pas dû utiliser plutôt l'alto à la place du violon pour mieux s'harmoniser avec le violoncelle ! » Fort heureusement, le compositeur a maintenu son choix initial. Autour de l'immense Abdel Rahman El Bacha au clavier d'ivoire, le violoniste Olivier Charlier témoigne une nouvelle fois de son talent à magnifier les œuvres méconnues. Quant à Antoine Pierlot, le talentueux violoncelliste déjà remarqué en 2009 à Reims par son interprétation des Suites de Bach, il confie que « ce concert restera comme un moment très riche, un moment d'échange intense, les micros ajoutant leur pointe d'adrénaline ». Cette intensité, l'incroyable connivence entre les musiciens et la puissance qu'ils donnent à la musique de chambre de Chopin sont quelques-uns des arguments qui doivent vous mener tout droit chez votre disquaire.

Brillante célébration en bleu-blanc-rouge au Victoria Hall
Il y avait une tour Eiffel et de grands cercles suspendus au plafond. Le tout en fleurs, évidemment, conformément à la tradition décorative du Concert de l'An des amis de l'OSR. La thématique était ainsi claire: le programme serait 100% français,
accompagné dans son développement musical par des illuminations sur lesdits supports floraux blancs. Il y en eut ainsi pour les yeux et pour les oreilles. Et ce fut donc la fête, lundi soir au Victoria Hall. D'autant que le chef Yutaka Sado et les soeurs Labèque étaient chargés d'animer une soirée placée sous le signe, l'esprit, le style et la musicalité issus de l'Hexagone de la fin du XIXe, et du début du XXe siècle.
Un régal assuré pour les nombreux spectateurs venus au rendez-vous, qui ne se sont pas fait prier pour se manifester chaleureusement après l'ultime Boléro de Maurice Ravel, donné en conclusion de soirée, et repris en bis dans sa partie finale.
Du murmure au cataclysme sonore, le chef contrôle avec facilité la fabuleuse montée en puissance du thème obsédant, repris par tous les pupitres jusqu'à l'explosion finale. Et les musiciens de naviguer entre finesse et violence avec une parfaite maîtrise du sens imprimé. Belle lecture, sans concession ni effets, efficace et redoutablement menée en issue de concert.
Comme il fallait ouvrir les feux dans l'économie, c'est le Divertissement de Jacques Ibert qui a fait office d'apéritif encore un peu tiède, avant les bouillonnants extraits des Suites de Carmen de Bizet, et le délicieux et trop rare Concerto pour deux pianos de Francis Poulenc.
Aux claviers, la pétulante Katia, lunettes noires de star pour raison de vilaine conjonctivite, et Marielle, l'équilibre du duo. Avec le temps, les deux soeurs s'habillent, se coiffent et se présentent de plus en plus comme des jumelles. Leur jeu, lui, ne trompe pas. Chacune son tempérament, sa sensibilité et son expérience. Même si la technique peut sembler identique, le toucher et l'approche ne peuvent qu'être personnels, et, les yeux fermés, le jeu des différences révèle ses évidences. Un rien de dureté parfois dans les attaques, mais de la liberté. à deux. à profusion..

El monográfico Beethoven -la obertura 'Coriolano', el 'Concierto nº 4 en sol mayor' para piano orquesta y la 'Séptima Sinfonía en la mayor'- sexto de los conciertos de abono de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga en el Teatro Cervantes, tuvo una gran acogida por parte del público hasta el punto de llenar la sala el viernes. Y la realidad es que los gustos de nuestro público van por el repertorio más conocido y tradicional y se aleja de otros programas más actuales y novedosos, criticados por la mayoría de los aficionados locales. Unanimidad en la favorable acogida al todo Beethoven, que tuvo una correcta lectura de 'Coriolano' a la que siguió el 'Concierto nº 4' del que fue solista al piano el franco/libanés Abdel Rahman El Bacha. Sonido claro el suyo, mesura, preciso mecanismo y sin grandes arrebatos -ni falta que hacían- que tuvo la colaboración atenta de los profesores de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga y la ajustada batuta del director titular y artístico de la misma, maestro Edmon Colomer. Como bis a solo, El Bacha tocó una pieza de sabor andaluz, con armonías y cadencias familiares a nuestros oídos -podría recordar a un incipiente 'prealbéniz'- de la propia 'cosecha' del pianista, que fue muy aplaudida. En la segunda parte, la 'Séptima' con el 'allegretto' tal vez con excesivo protagonismo de las cuerdas graves, impresionante línea rítmica del 'Presto' y un gran impulso, sin decaer el movimiento del 'Allegro con brío' final. Muy aclamados. Todo un éxito.

Un très bel enregistrement live, capté lors d’un concert au Grand Théâtre de Reims, dans le cadre des Flâneries musicales (2006). Un joli programme qui associe le Fandango, découvert en 1960, et treize sonates choisies parmi les deux cents sonates composées par le moine de la communauté hiéronymite de San Lorenzo de l’Escurial. Une musique ensorcelante, sensuelle et effrénée, mais également virtuose et mélancolique. Une belle interprétation, pleine d’allant qui incite à la danse.

Of Austrian and French-Italian origin, Bruno Leonardo Gelber was born in Argentina to musical parents and was introduced to the piano at the age of three and a half by his mother, who then remained his most important musical influence.
Bruno Leonardo Gelber made his first public appearance in Argentina at the age of five and when he was six he began to study with Vincenzo Scaramuzza. A year later Bruno Leonardo Gelber suffered a severe polio attack which completely confined him to bed for more than twelve months. But as music was the most important part of his life his parents had the family piano adjusted so that it could slide above his bed so the young Gelber could continue to practise.
By the age of fifteen, having played the Schumann concerto under Lorin Maazel, Bruno Leonardo Gelber had become a household name in South America. At the age of nineteen, he was given a grant by the French government which enabled him to travel to Paris and study. Marguerite Long heard him play there and she declared that he would be her last pupil, but that he would undoubtedly be her finest. Encouraged by Marguerite Long to present himself at her competition, he obtained third place which caused an uproar by the public and press who acclaimed him triumphant
In Europe it was to be the beginning of an immense international career which led Bruno Leonardo Gelber to perform extensively in recital as well as with orchestra.... altogether he has given more than 4600 concerts.
Patrons of his early concerts were personalities such as Ernest Ansermet, Rudolph Kempe, George Szell, Joseph Krips, Kyril Kondrachine, Alceo Galliera, Joseph Keilbert, Antal Dorati.
Bruno Leonardo Gelber has also played under the direction of conductors such as Ferdinand Leitner, Klaus Tennstedt, Eric Leinsdorf, Kurt Masur, Sergiu Celibidache, Sir Colin Davis, Charles Dutoit, Bernard Haitink, Lorin Maazel, Mstislav Rostropovich, Riccardo Chailly, Christophe Eschenbach, Esa-Pekka Salonen amongst others. He has also performed with renowned orchestras and institutions such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Musikverein, Tonhalle Zurich, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, l’Orchestre de Montreal, Philadelphia Orchestra, N.H.K. Tokyo, l’Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, London Symphony, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic.
He has also performed at La Scala Milan, and at the Salzburg, Granada, Aix-en-Provence, Lucerne and Zurich Festivals. In the United States he has played with Stanford Festival and the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras among others and an appearance at Carnegie Hall was highly acclaimed by the critic Schoenberg.
Bruno Leonardo Gelber has toured Australia with huge success and continues to tour extensively. Engagements have led him not only to Europe (Berlin, Paris, Athens, Vienna, London, Germany, Italy...) but as usual in the United States and also in Russia where he played under Vladimir Spivakov conducting his orchestra in Moscow at the Tchaïkovsky Conservatory but also in Saint Petersburg with the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yuri Temirkanov. In May 2008, Bruno Leonardo Gelber will tour for 3 weeks in Japan at the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his first tour in this country.
Bruno Leonardo Gelber's recordings, all of which have been universally acclaimed, have won several prestigious awards including the Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros and le Prix de l'Académie de Paris. His recordings for EMI include a remarkable recording of both Brahms Piano Concertos, the Third and Fifth Beethoven Piano Concertos, and a recording of romantic sonatas. The earlier recordings for Denon of the Beethoven Sonatas were recognised by the New York Times as one of the best recordings of 1989. Of the four Beethoven discs currently available, CD Review Magazine wrote ... quite simply the finest I have ever heard ... I could eulogise about the rest but there is no need; THIS IS A PIANIST IN A MILLION. All in all, four CDs to really listen to and talk about.
Transart Live has published the piano concerto N° 3 by Rachmaninov recorded in concert in Lugano and EMI Classics has released in the “Rarissime” collection a box of two CDs including pieces by Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert, Chopin and Liszt recorded a few years ago for the label but also the recordings of both Brahms’ concertos and the concertos N° 3 and N° 5 by Beethoven. He will record a Scarlatti’s recital in the next months for Sony.
The prestigious critic of Munich, Kaiser wrote he is a marvel. Arthur Rubinstein considered him one of the greatest pianists of his generation and chose him to participate in a film that François Reichenbach dedicated to Rubinstein. He is one of those artists who teach us more about those works we thought we knew well and who will in the future, we know, continue to teach us yet more. (Clarendon in the Paris’ newspaper Le Figaro). According to the French magazine Diapason, Bruno Leonardo Gelber is one of the hundred greatest pianists of the 20th century.

"An intimate yet well-balanced recording made in front of a mercifully quiet audience supports the chamber like dialogue between soloist and orchestra in this performance of the Schumann Cello Concerto. The conducting is incisive and expressive, with considerable attention lavished on inner orchestral detail. Matt Haimovitz offers a reading that is both sensitive and virtuosic: there is great poetic intimacy in the Langsam, particularly in the exposed double-stops, and he provides tremendous rhythmic energy in the finale, which is taken here at a steady tempo. A mellow and rewarding timbre form his 1710 Matteo Gofriller adds to the successful cocktail. All in all, this is not quite as enterprising a compilation as Haimovitz's previous release on this label, which coupled the two Haydn concertos with the rarely heard Feuermann arrangement of Mozart's Flute Concerto. That said, however, Laure Favre-Kahn delivers a pretty formidable interpretation of the Piano Concerto to make this a most attractive release".

The piano music of Tatar-Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina stands somewhat aside from the mainstream of her music, which was heavily influenced by Orthodox spirituality and various musico-mystical devices that flowed from it. This single-disc collection, however, shows that piano music played an important role in Gubaidulina's compositional development, and it includes one utterly delightful work. The album covers Gubaidulina's entire output for the piano, all of which dates from 1974 or before; the bulk of the music is from the 1960s. With the Bachian inspiration of the Chaconne, Toccata-Troncata, and Invention (tracks 1, 19, and 20), the music reveals the Shostakovich influence that Gubaidulina has spoken of but that is hard to pin down in her explicitly religious music. The sonata, composed in 1965, uses extended techniques (such as a bamboo-stick glissando executed on the piano's pegs), rough piano analogues of the unusual instrumental combinations that have characterized much of Gubaidulina's music, and contains structural embodiments of the Christian cross. Best of all are the 14 Musical Toys, composed in 1969. These are little descriptive pieces, very Russian, but not quite resembling the music of anybody else. Sample The Little Tit (track 8), where the focus is on the deep quiet of the forest rather than on the slight moments of birdsong. Of course, the set has a large measure of sheer humor -- try the jazz-flavored A Bear Playing the Double Bass and the Black Woman (track 9) -- and it ought to be much better known than it is. Recitalists: you are guaranteed to get good reviews if you program this work! At least if you play everything with the flair shown by Argentine pianist Marcela Roggeri in this live recital from Reims, cleanly recorded in 2007. An enjoyable set, and likely a must-have for Gubaidulina's admirers.

"A clear-sighted but thrilling account of some much-recorded music. Olivier Charlier and the Orchestre d'Auvergne play exactly what Vivaldi wrote, and play it extremely well. How's that for a concise review? At a time when ensembles and soloists seem to vie with one another to over-egg this seasonal pudding, treating Vivaldi's music as a point of departure of a display of theatrical improvisation, a performance that just does what it says in the score seems dangerously reactionary. But what this superb performance shows is that Vivaldi was quite capable of being colourful and graphic all by himself - he wasn't an opera composer for nothing. Not that there is any lack of drama in this playing. The summer storms are ferocious, and the tipsy yokels of autumn stagger about alarmingly (the above notwithstanding, the players do take some licence with tempo). But there is much sheer beauty as colour here. Charlier plays with a wonderfully clear, focused sound, his vibrato understated and eloquent, his phrasing exquisite. In full cry he is an exciting player, and if you wish to hear how to spin pure magic out of what seems the simplest of melodies, look no further. He recoreded sound of these live performances is excellent, warm and well-balanced."

"Vivaldi's Four Seasons violin concertos are perhaps the most famous pieces of classical music in existence, and new versions of them continue to find a market. A performance by a regional French orchestra and a rising French violinist, none of them using historical instruments, might seem to have a hard road ahead to make itself heard, but this little reading is rounded out with a pair of other very common Vivaldi concertos. The disc was recorded live at a festival in Reims that has served as source material for a number of releases on the Transart label, which is oriented toward live recordings. Violinist Olivier Charlier has a fine singing tone and simply plays to his strengths, shifting the emphasis to the slow (and slower) movements and their limpid melodies. The result is that the most enduring and endearing Vivaldi melody of all (track 11) comes out very well indeed here, and in general the strong tempo contrasts work to the benefit of the music's pictorial scenes. The outer movements contain little that hasn't been done many times before, and the live engineering is uninspiring. But the lesson is that no matter how familiar the Vivaldi Four Seasons may become as they approach their second half century at the top of the classical heap, there's still plenty of room for individual musicians to find the places where these concertos fit their particular talents."
